What You'll Need:
- Deck of Cards - Pipe Cleaner - Red or Black Construction Paper - Toothpick/ Sandwich Pick - Hot Glue Gun - Scissors - Expo Marker |
How to make it:
1. Collect the materials you will need. 2. Cut 1/4 of the pipe cleaner off (this will shorten the guard's arms). 3. Hot glue the pipe cleaner to the top of the card. 4. Use the paper to cut out legs/feet as well as a head (the card's symbol) 5. Hot glue the legs/feet to the back of the card and the head to the front 6. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the toothpick to create a spear. 7. Use an expo marker to write the student's name on the card. |
Summary:
Off with their heads! These "card guards" are a fun addition to any hall. Not only are they simple to make, but most of the supplies needed come in large packs. For halls with many residents, this is an easy way to make good door decorations on a limited budget.
This is a good door decoration to make at the beginning of the year. Just like your residents, each door dec is unique in their own way. Some come from different families (suits), some are different colors, some may even think they have higher personal values than others, but it is important to remember that together, your community is strong! During your opening hall meeting, have a student tear a playing card in half, now have them try to tear the entire deck in half. A community is strongest when they look out for one another and understand that each member of their group is different and important in their own way! Seeing the playing card on their front door every day may help them to remember this important lesson.
Other lessons you can incorporate in your programming may include:
-Lessons on substance abuse (Alice in Wonderland)
-Politic discussions (House of Cards)
