When you are missing someone, time seems to move slower, and when I'm falling in love with someone, time seems to be moving faster." -Taylor Swift

Today I was looking for Facebook's "year in review" feature which they post on accounts every December which "reviews your year"; the most liked pictures, most commented statuses, and even links you had shared with friends, anything that meant a lot to you over the course of the past 365 days. This year I was having a harder time finding it and after doing some research, I found that Facebook had tried something new and had posted a picture with the caption "it's been a great year". Unknown to the engineers of this automated feature, some of these pictures had brought up previous postings of tragic events which had happened in users lives such as death, divorce, and other events users would have wanted to bury in the past. Of course no one intended this to happen and Facebook has apologized for this occurrence, have changed the caption to "see you next year", and have said they will try harder next year, but it really got me thinking. It's important to remember many may have a missing place at their dining room table this holiday season.
When I was younger, a group of friends and I always loved New Years. Each year we would meet at one of our houses, make pigs in the blanket, sing karaoke, watch Disney movies, share New Years Resolutions and watch the ball drop. For more than 5 years this happened the same way every year, we even ate at the same Waffle House each morning! One of the last times we did this event will always have a special place in my mind and heart. During the traditional New Year resolution sharing moment, one of my friends was very silent for a long time and then shared that they would want to be able to make it to the next New Years gathering. She had been sick for a long time with leukemia and I am sad to say she had died later that year.
Sometimes we get swept up into everything around us, grades/work, physical appearances, relationships, etc and we don't take the time to truly see what is important. We need to take the time to love; love ourselves and love others around us...to really hold on tight. You never know who might go missing.
I know this has not been one of the happiest posts, especially during this traditionally "happy time", but the truth of the matter is that no one ever completely "goes missing" from our hearts. When making your New Years resolutions this year, maybe take the time to make an additional one to strengthen the bonds of love for others around you. For anyone who has lost someone, I am so sorry and my prayers go out to you. Best wishes everyone, merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
