Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus"- Hogwarts School Motto
Hello world! For those of you who are new, welcome to the Luminstruct blog! I am currently working on a "365 Word Project" where everyday I will be posting a reflection on a word and today's word is "Awaken".
So this topic may seem all over the place, but I promise I'm going to attempt to tie it all together in the end! For those that do not know, the Hogwarts school motto in the Harry Potter world is Draco Dormiens Nuquam Titllandus. For those that do not know Latin, this means "Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon." I always thought it was kind of an odd school motto. Although I am sure there are plenty of interpretations of this line, here is my best guess from my own personal point of view.
For those that do not know, my dog is crazy. She is about the same size as the dog in the picture above, and like the dog above, when she sleeps, she looks truly at peace. With this being said, I know if I were ever to move slightly from my seat, she would be immediately woken up and demand to be let out or have her belly rubbed. Because of this, I think the English Idiom, "let sleeping dogs lie" is a fair equivalent to "never tickle a sleeping dragon." You don't want to ask for trouble, but if you play with fire, you will be burned!
I'm not sure why this was the first phrase that came to mind when I heard the word "awaken", but then again I'm a little tired myself, so it is hard to explain a lot of what I do :) Anyways, food for thought, what do you think it means?
About the video: In honor of the Harry Potter themed post, here is a video which was uploaded last year by 'Improv Everywhere'. In my opinion, I always thought they were some of the best pranksters of YouTube, this channel has been uploading fun social experiments since 2006 and are still going strong. Unlike many prank videos, Improv Everywhere's videos usually seek to improve the quality of people's day through humor. Not too shabby of an idea to get behind! Goodnight all!
