As the school year is drawing to a close, I find myself preparing for various banquets and closing ceremonies. One of these ceremonies is for the National Residence Hall Honorary. For those of you who do not know what this is, it is a group of the top 1% of leaders on campus who live in the residence halls and I am one of their advisers.
For this ceremony it is my job to share some inspiring words as we bring in new members, say goodbye to the old members, and give out various awards for an amazing year. Last year I gave the members a poem about giving someone a pen and what they could do with it. This analogy eventually became "if someone gave you a life" what would you do with it. It is one of my favorite poems and I'll have to share it sometime on this site. This year I think I'm going to go back to my roots and go with the famous starfish story. With so many people having their minds on a summer beach vacation, it would be very appropriate to share this story at the end of the year.
Margaret Mead once said, "never doubt a small group can change the world." Although our chapter is small, I know that we have made a big difference to some students, faculty, and staff at Western. With less than twenty members, we have been able to run many service projects and recognize nearly 300 amazing people every year. These nominations have gone past our school level and have reached regional and have even won at the national level! I am very proud of my kids and all the hard work they have done! I know I'm going to miss them terribly as we move into the next academic year. As cheesy of an ending as this is, I know they have made a difference with me.
