"Dream small dreams. If you make them too big, you get overwhelmed and you don't do anything. If you make small goals and accomplish them, it gives you the confidence to go on to higher goals." - John H. Johnson
Hello world! If you are new, welcome to the Luminstruct blog! My name is Mark and I am currently working on a "365-Word Project" by posting reflections on various words every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The reflections can be serious, can be about Student Affairs, or might just be some silly ramblings. Either way, I will do my best to take you on a journey through the personal story of my life. I hope you enjoy. Today's word is "Goals"Have you ever gone rock climbing before? I was very excited when my school installed a wall in our new Student Commons this past fall. In my opinion, it is one of the best workouts your body can endure as your arms and legs need to work together in order to reach the top! |
In many ways, I see the wall as a perfect analogy of life as a whole. Each rock signifies a different goal and the top signifies reaching your full potential. There may be times when you have to rethink your route or alter your course, there might be routes you decide not to use, but there are also goals which need to be taken in order to reach the next step in your life. Some of the steps could not be easier and launch you forward towards your dreams, some are near impossible and make you feel so much more successful once you complete this step, and others may seem impossible and scary, but turn out to easy once you take on the courage to pursue them. You might not scale the wall the first time, you may not scale the wall the second, you might not scale the wall at all, but the main thing that matters is that you try.
I think one of the main ways for you to reach your full potential is to constantly set many smaller goals in order to complete the larger ones. Just like the rock wall, you won't be able to jump from the first rock to the top. To fulfill your potential, it requires a lot of discipline as you feel your way up the wall and take each rock one step at a time. You might lose your grip and fall back to the starting point, but you are done when you decide to be done. Push your limits, reach up and claim the final prize, there will always be new wall ready to be breached in your life. It is your decision to face them. Let's go!
Question time: How do you complete your goals?
