Today's word is "Locket".This blog post topic has proven to be one of the more difficult topics to write about. Yesterday was the first summer orientation for Piedmont College. This is always one of my favorite times of the year. The parents always show a wide variety of emotions and the students match these emotions with nervousness and excitement. Before the first session began, I had a chance to get to know some of the early arrivals. I always enjoy getting to hear the student's stories, learning of their passions and hearing their hopes and dreams. One of the groups I spoke with were a mother and daughter. The daughter was interested in getting a degree in Art Education in the hopes of being a middle school art teacher. Her mom proudly took out her phone to show me a picture of a water colored canvas her daughter had worked on and had won various awards for.
It is interesting to see how technology has changed over time. Back in the day parents would proudly show individuals pictures of their children when opening a locket which they kept close to them at all times. Years later, this proud presentation became wallet-sized picture which could be readily available at a moment's notice. Now in the digital age, there are more options for pictures to be shown on cell phones, tablets, and other technology. I am interested to see what the next step will be.
With that being said, the concept behind the locket still holds true to this day. It is a chance for a parent to keep their child close to them at all times and show how proud they are of their student's accomplishments and abilities. It may not seem like much to listen to a story about a water-color art assignment, but it makes all the difference to that parent. It's all part of the orientation experience, to let their child go, but to always keep a piece of them close to their heart.
