Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else." Margaret Mead

Typically I write this post every night, but for this post in particular, I waited until the next morning to decide what I wanted to talk about. "Unique" is a very interesting word to write about. I'm still not completely sold on the direction I went with, but here is what came out of a good night's sleep.
Margaret Mead once said that we are unique, just like everyone else. This is a funny concept because if everyone is unique, than no one is unique. During my undergrad, I took a class in ethics. Ironically enough it was my least favorite course I've ever taken. I felt the professor was trying to pick fights with the students in order to start a conversation and I don't really work that way. One of the courses I remember actually directly continued with this idea. If the majority of people in this word try to be different and if everyone is different, than no one is different. Although this is probably one of the only discussion points that I somewhat agreed with, he also went into long discussions about how Judas was the real hero because without him, Christ would not be betrayed... I felt like it was all backwards kind of thinking and none of it had to do with "being ethical" or having morals. So where does that bring this conversation? I believe that everyone is trying to figure out their own identity. In order to understand ourselves, we can then begin to understand the world around us. Although many other people have a sister, a dog, two parents, or even grew up in a similar socioeconomic status, there is not a single person on this earth who has had the same exact background as I have.
Even with a tiny difference in our history, we can become someone completely different. This brings up the conversation of nurture verses nature. If we were to clone Hitler, who says he would be the same person the original person was today? Although I do believe a big part of ourselves can be broken down and explained in a chemical and biological way, I also believe everything is not decided in this way and we are fully impacted by others around us as well. For my graduation present, my sister made me a board of notes from many of my mentors. Looking at this board now, I quickly realize that I would be a very different person if I hadn't met even one of them! So to wrap things up, I do believe we are unique, just like everyone else, but just because everyone is different, doesn't take away from the fact that we are different kinds of different (if that makes sense). So there you go, that is what a good night of sleeping on a topic will do for you. I'll see you all again tonight!
Question time: What is something that you do that makes you unique?
About the video: I found this video yesterday and it really blew me away that there are more arrangements of ways a set of playing cards can be shuffled than there are atoms on earth! In many ways the cards you are holding may very well be the first time ever that formation has ever been seen on the earth! How's that for being unique?!? :) Enjoy!
