Hello world! For those of you who are new, welcome to the Luminstruct blog! I am currently working on a "365 Word Project" where everyday I will be posting a reflection on a word and today's word is "New".

It is amazing to see how far we have come over the past few years. In a week I will be graduating with my masters degree and it feel like yesterday I was being interviewed to be an Assistant Resident Director at Western Carolina University. One of the joys of my job is having a new adventure everyday and not always knowing where things will take you as time goes by. In many ways it is a new beginning every morning and this really excites me.

For those that don't know, I am a big follower of all things YouTube. I'm not sure how I got to where I am, but I know one of the first channels I followed was a news channel done by Philip DeFranco. Every week, Phil posts three or four videos (not including his vlogs) where he sheds some light on the positive side of the news. Although he does post the tragic events as well, he also manages to highlight the silver lining of events which really make the world seem a tiny bit brighter. A little over a year ago, he posted a "draw my life" video (posted below) and it really got me thinking how many events happen in our lives to make us who we are today. I have been very fortunate to have not experienced some of these crazy events, but it really impacted me to see how he could take a negative situation and turn it into a positive platform to start a new adventure.

Since posting the "draw my life" video, Phil has grown his company significantly, he now manages three popular YouTube channels (not including his personal vlog channel), he got engaged to Lindsay (the girl mentioned in the video), and Lindsay just gave birth to their first son, Trey. Although I have never met Phil in real life, nor do I expect to anytime soon, I really admire his hard work, passion for what he does, as well as not being afraid to start new adventures and becoming a better version of himself. There have been multiple channels or shows he has tried which have become flops, but he has still risen past these challenges and have become something much bigger than just a news channel.

Although I would not easily admit it, growing older scares me. In this day and time, people are constantly searching for the best and newest product on the market and in many cases this occurs with hiring people as well. Although I am at the best place in my life right now to be looking for a job (and have gotten a fantastic job at Piedmont), I'm afraid I will either spoil like sour milk or be replaced by the next set of grads coming out of grad programs as I get older. I know I really don't have much to worry about now, but it does scare me that I will lose the spark I've managed to keep with me wherever I go.

Every place I have worked people call me passionate, creative, and a hard worker. I'm not trying to pat myself on the back or anything, but it is rare to see these characteristics as you continue up the food chain. Somewhere along the way, professionals in departments such as orientation or res life loose their joy in the job and ultimately loose the spark which makes them who they are as a unique individual. In many cases students tend to wear the professionals down and they usually leave to enter a different department that is more stable, or stay in the department and perform their job as if they were just going through the motions. I know everything is very new and exciting for me right now, but I hope to never lose my "new shine". It is important to constantly seek to remake ourselves and continue to aim for the stars while not being afraid to try new things. Like Phil, I hope to challenge myself and seek to work with others as we create better and newer versions of each other. It will not be an easy task, but it is a task worth fighting for.
