Hello world! For those of you who are new, welcome to the Luminstruct blog! I am currently working on a "365 Word Project" where everyday I will be posting a reflection on a word and today's word is "Wisdom".
Tomorrow I officially start my job at Piedmont college! It's kind of strange going into a school as the director of residential education. I always thought that I would eventually get a position like this by slowly climbing up the ladder and paying my time in order to take a job like this. Piedmont is a special circumstance, and I'm very honored to come across this opportunity and show them what I've got.
Although I do believe I can do this job, I worry about what others will think when they see me in this position. A director or manager is often someone who has a lot of wisdom and experience in a topic, and many people do not picture someone my age when they consider these positions. It will be my job to change their mind and have them begin to rethink their preconceived notions.
It's kind of funny, the video posted below actually talked just about these topics while I was writing. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and take a deeper look at yourself and what you want to become. You have to be the best version of yourself that you can be. Of course things are scary and of course there are things that I won't know (I'm sure the majority of the job will be filled with new experiences), but that is where my supervisor comes in handy as well as the possibility of learning along the way and from time to time, learning how to face failure. Sure no one enjoys to fail, but you also miss 100% of the shots you never shoot. How will you know if you can make a three point shot if you never have the courage to take it in the first place? What if you shoot and you miss? You will still make a mental note about what you did wrong and will attempt to improve your shot for next time. Trial and error is one of the easiest ways to learn the best practice.
Many people think of Edison's quote about not failing, just finding 10,000 ways that won't work, but I'm challenging the commonly used quotes. Edison also said, "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." In some cases, I kind of like this quote even more. We are often on the verge of greatness, it is only our job to follow it through! I think that is what wisdom is all about, putting yourself out there and learning along the way. Live in the mystery of the unknown and make it your home! Hopefully that was all the in-depth reflection you were looking for tonight. It's only 10:00, but I want to make my best impression tomorrow! Question Time: Considering the video below, what movie character stands out to you the most when considering the word, wisdom? I'm personally a fan of Robin Williams from the Dead Poets Society!
About the Video: I found this clip today, but I really enjoyed it! It is a bit heavy on some movies (Star Wars), but it is kind of interesting to see all of the great advice seen from the different character's role models! Considering the topic above, I was actually surprised how many of these quotes were not from older "Mr Miyagi" kind of characters! Take a look for yourself!
