Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration
Author: Ed Catmull
Intended Luminstruct Audience:
Mid-Level/Senior Staff
Book Summary:
Creativity, Inc. is a book for managers who want to lead their employees to new heights, a manual for anyone who strives for originality, and the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar Animation—into the meetings, postmortems, and “Braintrust” sessions where some of the most successful films in history are made. It is, at heart, a book about how to build a creative culture—but it is also, as Pixar co-founder and president Ed Catmull writes, “an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible.”

Luminstruct Review:
We greatly enjoyed having "Creativity Inc." as our first book club novel! The way Ed Catmull writes was refreshing and inspiring! While others may teach these lessons through "do's and don'ts" of a business model, Ed's imagery let you feel as if you were a part of the team and were experiencing every situation as it happened. He explained the creation and development of the Pixar company in a storytelling way and spoke of mistakes and failures as learning moments and not as something to hide or be ashamed of. We appreciated his candor and were inspired by his recommendations for building a good team dynamic. There were some moments where it was unknown where he was going in his story and what he was trying to teach, but it always wrapped back into itself and created a complete picture and frame of reference. It was fun to "pull back the curtain" and see the workings of a company which have grown near and dear to many of our hearts! We would highly recommend this book.
