Summary:
Let's get groovy with awesome blast from the past door decs! These lava lamps are easy to make and will liven up an residence hall. The materials needed are fairly simple and come in large packs. The only aspect which may take you the longest is to make a template. Once you have created a glass section and wax cut out you like, all you need to do is trace and cut along the lines! Although it takes a lot of cutting, if you have friends/residents willing to help, this door decoration can be made fairly quickly and is best for halls with many residents.
This door dec is fun for any age of student and works best at the end of the year or during mid-terms. Sometimes the slow moving lava reminds students to slow down when things start getting stressful. A fun addition to these door decs is to host a "lava lamp making party". You can find a tutorial here. This program does require various supplies, but it also lets the students go home with a fun souvenir and teaches them about the scientific principle of density and you can discuss stress management techniques. When they feel stressed, take some time to watch the water molecules rise and fall in the oil solution! Shake things up a bit and invite a science professor as a guest speaker for students to get to know a professor outside of the classroom!
Other lessons you can incorporate in your programming may include:
- I "Lava" You- Recognition event
- Decades Night- Social event
- Bottled Emotions- Managing Emotions
- Lava Cake in a Cup- Microwave Cooking 101
