What You'll Need:
- 1 Sheet of White Paper - 1 Sheet of Black Paper - 1 Sheet of Orange Paper - 1 Pencil - 1 Glue Stick - 1 Marker - Scissors |
How to make it:
1. Collect the materials you will need. 2. Cut out two large circles out of the white and black construction paper (body). 3. Cut out two smaller white circles for the eyes (about the size of a quarter). 4. Cut out one orange triangle for the beak and 2 black triangles for the wings. 5. Lay the white paper half way over the black and trace the black outline, cut along this line. 6. Glue the eyes on the top, wings on the sides, beak in the middle and the belly at the bottom. 7. Use the marker to write the student's name on the paper as well as two circles on the eyes. |
Summary:
Who doesn't love our feathery formal friends from the far south? These penguins are easy to make and are silly enough to make any student smile. The materials needed are fairly simple and come in large packs. Although it takes a lot of cutting, if you have friends willing to help or have a die-cut machine which makes multiple circles at the same time, this door decoration can be made fairly quickly and is best for halls with many residents.
While it still may be cold outside, this is a good door dec for the beginning of the Spring semester for any age of student. Especially at the beginning of the semester, many students are beginning to think about Valentines Day dates/dances, interviews for summer internships/jobs, or other chances for them to get dressed up. With penguins being the most formal-looking members of the bird family, you can tie this theme in with a teaching students how to dress professionally! A lot of people are not aware that certain attire companies (such as Men's Warehouse) have programs where they can come into your school and teach students how to dress their best, how to tie a tie, or help students prepare for job opportunities. Each company is different (of course), but some businesses bring examples for students to try on, creating a fashion show kind of event, or even give out coupons to their stores to allow students to buy their merchandise at a discounted rate! This is a great opportunity to create a strong partnership between your school and the local community while also teaching students how to dress professionally and how to look their best for any occasion.
Other lessons you can incorporate in your programming may include:
- Happy Feet!- Dance Lessons and Cultural Awareness
- How to Break the Ice- How to Build Healthy Relationships
- Don't Let Stress Ruffle Your Feathers- Stress Management
- Birds of a Feather Flock Together- Community Building and Anti-Bullying
- March of the Penguins- 5k Race
- Early Bird Gets the Worm- Time Management
- Avoid the Snow Tow- Winter Driving Tips
