Summary:
The world is always changing, it is our job to ensure it is changing for the better. These turtles are easy to make and bring a smile to your residents. The materials needed are fairly simple to come by if you recycle used water bottles. You can also save some time/resources if you use green bottles instead of spray-painting. Although they are easy to make, having to cut many bottles can take some time, so it is recommended to create this door dec on a floor with less residents.
This door dec is fun for any age of student and can be used at any time of the year! A fun addition to these door decs is hosting a "recycling carnival night". Challenge your students to various games which may inspire environmental discussions on how to be ecologically friendly. Games may include, water bottle bowling, "can it recycle?" sorting competition, bio-degradable water balloon toss, eco-trivia, paper plate ring toss, or a competitive game of trash-sketball. It would also be beneficial to have a table set up with resources where students can get involved in saving the world when it comes to water conservation, saving electricity, and reducing waste.
Want to take it up a notch? Talk with a worker in your Facilities department, more likely than not, they can tell you how much water/energy was used in your building. Challenge your residents to reduce the amount of energy used for months to follow! Your Facilities contact may also have connections to electric companies who are willing to come onto campus to give out free energy efficient light bulbs in exchange for resident's high-wattage bulbs! It's time to catch a wave and surf toward a more environmentally-friendly future!
Other lessons you can incorporate in your programming may include:
- What's You Spirit Animal (Moana Theme)- Personality test event
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Pizza Night- Social event
- Finding Resources (Finding Nemo Theme)- College Resource Tutorial for Freshmen
- The Tortoise and the Hare Fun Run- 5K Charity Run
