5 Advising Languages:
Originally adapted from Dr. Gary Chapman's book, "Five Love Languages (2005) as well as Liz Grant and Torry Bruce's AIMHO 2005 Presentation, the 5 Advising Languages offers a supervisor the opportunity to understand the staff and how they like to be recognized/appreciated. Upon completion, the individual will know they respond best to Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Gifts, Quality Time, or Physical Touch. |
Cross the Line:
Courtesy of Brian Boyer (Western Carolina University), "Cross the Line" attempts to recognize diversity among individuals with regard to categories we normally think of (race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) as well as many other elements such as values, hobbies, interests, and many more. (Bring a box a tissues, this can be a very emotional activity.) |
Identity Walk:
Courtesy of the University of Georgia, the "Identity Walk" is a diversity activity which recognizes different student identities they associate themselves with and how these personas affect their everyday lives. |
I'm on a Boat:
Courtesy of Zachary Harrison (Eastern Michigan University) and Mark Jestel (Western Carolina University), "I'm on a Boat" is a diversity activity which recognizes values and ethics. Students are put in a difficult situation, having to choose who lives and who dies in an apocalyptic flood. |
Values Assessment:
Courtesy of the University of Georgia, the "Values Assessment" activity recognizes the core values of the students in a group. By the end of the activity, students will have chosen their top five values out of the potential 64. |
